Westbound Ore Loads70 viewsFrequently, after coal was unloaded at Port Covington, the empty cars would be shifted to the ore pier where they would be loaded with imported iron ore from Venezuela for shipment to the steel mills of Pittsburgh. This improved car utilization, providing a revenue trip back west. Coal loads from Atlas 55t hoppers are painted a rusty brown, and drop right into the 70 ton cars to represent the heavier, denser ore load.
